The world is big, busy, noisy and often chaotic and there are many stressors out there; stress levels are at an all time high. No matter the stressors, though, we can manage and maintain a sense of peace…it just takes the right tools and mindset, and a commitment to self care and creating that life-work balance.
To feel at peace and less ruffled by the world around us, we need to have a solid self care practice and some tools for calming our nervous system. Without these, we’re heading for burnout, anxiety, depression, lethargy, just overall lack of enjoyment of life. Oh, and there’s physical illness.
Unchecked stress reactions can cause all manner of illness, by compromising our immune systems, raising our heart rates and blood pressure, and basically keeping us in fight/flight/freeze/fawn mode 24/7. This means the body and mind think there’s an imminent danger, like being chased by a tiger, and we need to be ready at any moment to protect ourselves.
We can end up in this place purely from what’s in our minds, regardless of the environmental factors. If we’re focused on what didn’t work in the past, or our worry about the future, our systems register that as unsafe.
The good news is, we can use that in the opposite direction. We can tell ourselves that everything is fine, we’re safe and there’s nothing to worry about, then we shift into rest/digest mode.
